Why this newsletter was created
I spent 10 years in the day spa industry testing what actually works — and it's not what the marketing gurus are selling.
Ashley James Founder, Spa Marketing Tips
My name is Ashley James. I started as a licensed esthetician, worked the front desk, and eventually managed a high-volume day spa in a competitive suburban market. I loved the work. But the business side? That part nearly broke me.
I tried everything. I hired a marketing agency — they charged a retainer, sent generic emails about "brand awareness," and couldn't tell a chemical peel from a HydraFacial. Three months in, I'd spent over $3,000 and booked exactly four new clients from it.
I bought courses. Real ones — from people with big followings and polished sales pages. I'd get excited, start the first three modules, and then a slammed week would happen and I'd never go back. The information wasn't bad. There just wasn't time to get through 24 video lessons while attending clients and managing no-shows.
I posted on Instagram religiously for six months. Reels, carousels, tips, behind-the-scenes. Got followers. Got likes. Got almost no bookings.
So I started keeping a notebook. Every time I tested something — a referral script, a rebooking email, a slow-season promotion — I wrote down what happened. What worked. What flopped. What worked once and never again. Over years of running experiments in a real spa business, patterns started to emerge.
The strategies that actually moved the needle were almost always simple. Not flashy. Not complicated. A well-timed text to lapsed clients. A one-line addition to the checkout process. A specific way to ask for referrals that didn't feel pushy. Things that took 20 minutes and reliably produced bookings.
I started sharing these in a newsletter. One tip per week. Step-by-step instructions. Nothing else.
Within the first 60 days, I was getting emails back from spa owners telling me that a single tip had filled their slow days, re-engaged clients they hadn't seen in several months, or finally given them a rebooking system that actually ran on its own.
That's why Spa Marketing Tips exists. Not to teach you marketing theory. Not to overwhelm you with options. Just to hand you one clear, tested, spa-specific thing to do each week — and trust that if you do enough of these, your business will grow.
